SWIM

To achieve NextGen’s objectives of making a wide range of information and capabilities available through the use of a common infrastructure of reusable and shared services, FAA established the System Wide Information Management (SWIM) program. The goal of the SWIM program is to support information sharing among NAS stakeholders by providing governance, as well as architectural and technical solutions for identifying, developing, provisioning, and operating a framework of shareable and reusable services. SWIM addresses the communications and interoperability requirements of highly-distributed, loosely-coupled and platform-independent components by consistently applying the principals of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). Registries Collaboration

The Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) collaborative project is currently implementing a European SWIM Registry, which aims to become the authoritative source of information about all SWIM services that have been or are being deployed in Europe. As part of a joint effort between NextGen and SESAR, the NSRR team works closely with developers of the European registry to allow both FAA and European stakeholders to efficiently discover all SWIM services. Service Semantics

In the SWIM environment, where different SOA services are developed by different organizations at different sites by different groups of developers, it is essential that the information, or metadata, used to describe these services be interpreted and processed consistently and unambiguously by all parties that participate in data exchange, including both people and computers. The NSRR registers and maintains service descriptions (“the information needed in order to use, or consider using, a service”) that are composed of standards-based formally-defined metadata attributes, thereby making it possible to present service descriptions in a manner suitable for human-readable and machine-processable representations.
